Kate Dumhart

100 ton USCG Licensed Boat Captain
Sultana

When welcoming guests onboard the Schooner Sultana, Kate introduces herself with “My name is Kate, and I am the captain.” This immediately impresses upon them that yes, this female is indeed the captain. She realized as an adult that the maritime life was her calling. It took years of hard work, sacrifice, late nights studying, and insistence on getting every bit of training she could, before she earned her position on the educational schooner. Many of the skills she learned in her journey are more specific to being a woman in a male-dominated space than they are related to sailing. She learned how to be in command, when to ask for help, and how to use her voice. With these skills, she comfortably fills her role as captain, absolutely loving her place in the world.
