Jen Bowie

100-ton USCG Licensed Boat Captain

Offering a helping hand was how Jen found her way into a maritime career. While running a bait and tackle shop, she helped a boater on a hot day. Despite not having the specific skill set, she was confident that she could handle the task and offered her help. This led to a job offer and the start of her career on the water. In the years since then, she learned the ins and outs of the industry and became an excellent boater. She now works as a safety boat captain transporting crew to their place of duty on bridges, and stays to ensure that a boater is on hand in event of an emergency. Being a woman in this field is no small feat. Dodging the minefield that such a male-dominated industry could be, she’s been able to find a trusted work environment where she is comfortable. Being a captain who provides safety for other workers, it’s wonderful to feel a sense of safety from her network. She provides inspiration to other females, including her daughter, that women can fill this role and fit in at an industrial maritime workplace.
